Most current loft buildings used to be utilized as warehouses, manufacturing plants, or storage space. Lofts quickly became a popular option for artists as they soon began inhabiting these high ceiling wide-open spaces with lots of light which made them perfect creative livable work spaces. The initially low prices also made it ideal for starving artists.

Loft Glossary:

  • A hard loft is one where the space is open with the exception of the bathroom.
  • A soft loft typically has 3/4 high walls that enclose the bedrooms and normally include some of the elements of a hard loft.
  • Raw lofts are unfinished space and don't always include a sink and toilet.
  • Upscale lofts include high quality kitchen and bathroom finishes.
  • Moderate lofts have mid-priced kitchen and bathroom finishes.
